The man is so mellow and laid-back that it doesn’t immediately register that one of his bands is the decibel-mad, blues-thrashing Man-Eaters of Tsavo, named for the gruesome tale of the man-eating African lions that once devoured turn-of-the-century railroad workers.

Unlike the current rash of DJs who fill dance floors with laptop-manipulated programs, mashed-up song snippets, sound effects, heavy bass and looped beats, Hernandez spins only vinyl records – 45s, EPs and LPs – and plays songs beginning to end.

He leaves the hip-hop, rap and pitch-bending to others. He’s playing to “the record heads.”
